Sorrow is felt for a vanishing language
I look for stories that are one-of-a-kind. In covering American Indian affairs, I traveled more than 100 miles into Adair County to find a happily married couple amid feuding tribes. There's the time I waded waist-deep into a creek alongside a Cherokee gig fisher. He armed me with refashioned bed springs attached to a wooden spear. I caught two crawfish that day. In another, I watched Choctaw farmers toss mountains of surplus hay onto trucks destined for Navajo country during a drought. I even balanced a Comanche woman in full regalia off the side of Mount Scott near Lawton during strong winds. Those were notable assignment memories. Girls who get pregnant can carry their babies to term (thereby protecting the sanctity of human life), deliver them, then haul them down and drop them off in a cage, or, excuse me, a bassinet or crib or something, at the Humane Society for Humans, and the baby--this precious life--can wait for someone to come along and adopt it, which of course some life-loving fellow human will do quite promptly, and the child will have a wonderful life, forever and ever, just like the wannabe-pets at the Humane Society for Animals. Want to stop abortion? Well, first you would have to change the world. Can't do that? Well, try then to make your kids stop having sex too young. Can't do that?
